LONDON, July 21, 2005. The European Pressphoto Agency (epa) and Corbis have announced the signing of an exclusive agreement in which the two companies will collaborate on editorial planning and extend the reach of epa's output via Corbis's global licensing and rights management services.
Under the agreement, Corbis will market epa's news-based photography to publishers, while seeking out new opportunities for commercial use of the images by advertisers. The editorial teams from both companies will co-operate daily to ensure that the most relevant and exciting images are delivered for a diverse range of global audiences.
The new agreement marks epa's position as a leading international newsphoto provider and is one of the first to exploit the extensive global expansion that Corbis has undertaken in 2005, developing its business in new markets and opening several new offices in the Americas, Asia and Europe.
epa, founded in 1985, established its reputation as the number one photo news agency in Europe with outstanding coverage of events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, the ousting of Mikhail Gorbachev and the wars in the former Yugoslavia. In May 2003 it expanded into a world-wide picture service and successfully embraced this market with sustained performances in post-war Iraq, the Middle East, Asia, the Far East, Africa and America. Today, its network of 400 photographers contributes to a daily EPA photo report of 750 pictures.
Corbis is a global media services company that helps publishers, advertising and design agencies, filmmakers, and other creative professionals to tell their stories with images. Its contemporary and archival photography, in-depth feature stories, illustrations and motion footage are seen around the world every day -- supporting news stories, differentiating brands and selling products.
"Following its launch as a world-wide newsphoto agency two years ago, epa has been able to quickly establish itself as a trustworthy, reliable partner and supplier to newspapers around the globe," said Jorg Schierenbeck, epa's Managing Director. "This strategic co-operation with Corbis will enable us to fully exploit the potential of our photography in the broader image-buying market."
"This agreement is about making the most of our extensive global resources and working co-operatively with a strategic partner to meet the needs of all our customers," said Gary Shenk, Corbis senior vice president, editorial image licensing and rights services. "epa has a fantastic reputation and will add a new and dynamic dimension to the huge range of images already available through Corbis."
